Walmart Savings
We went to Walmart tonight - mostly for entertainment purposes. While we were there, I picked up some things that are normally good deals at Walmart and not normally good deals at Publix.
Tonight, I picked up several feminine care items at a minimal price of .25 per package. I was also able to pick up four Mahatma Rice products for only .22 each. I also found some Hormel Bacon with peelies for .55 off when you purchased along with Grand biscuits. I added two small cans of grands biscuits and was able to use both .55 coupons and a .35 coupon on the biscuits. Cool Deal Huh?
We also found a Organix shampoo on clearance for $4.50 with the hang-tag for a rebate. DD will be sending that one in. (I just got my rebate a couple of days ago.)
We tried to do a deal of buying two Tostito Dips and get a bag of chips free. Unfortunately, the cashier mis-read the coupon and we elected to just skip the whole thing. We'll try again at Walmart next time or if DD just has to have cheese dip before then, we'll head to Publix.
Total OOP for food and health/beauty items was $33.31 including tax and a savings of $9.90 from coupons. Not bad for a quick trip on the fly.
Now, I need to go sort my coupons and pull the February ones. Later.

Takin' a Break!
Work is just going to be non stop for the rest of the week, I'm expecting company (you know who you are) and I have a birthday party this weekend for my little girlies (grand-daughters) -They'll be three!
To accomplish all that HAS to be done, I'll be taking a break from blogging until Monday when I hope to return with lots of deals.
I'm going to try to get back to Publix tomorrow to get some more deals on their Viva Italia sale. Especially now that I can print good coupons!

Bargain at Walgreens
I just came back from Walgreens. My printer's black ink cartridge was on it's last leg. (I bet the bar codes on those coupons I printed yesterday won't even scan.) I took an empty cartridge down to Walgreens to have it refilled and guess what? They're having a special - $5 for the black ink! That's a deal. I'm going to take my spare cartridge down there tomorrow and get it filled up as well. I paid for this with a gift card so my OOP was $0.
While I was at Walgreens, I also picked up a prescription refill for only $5.
On the down side, my Walgreens was a 24 hour pharmacy but beginning this weekend, they will be closing at 11pm. That stinks but I bet we'll see more and more of this until our economy improves.

Kotex and Kleenex
I had a $2 EBC that expired Saturday so I made a quick trip to the CVS.
I was looking for the most economical way to spend this $2 and the only request I had was to get some tissue. I ended up with two Kotex products and a Kleenex facial tissue. All items were $1.49 each. After two .75 coupons and my $2 ECB, my OOP was $1.12 including tax.
I've got a $10 EBC burning a hole in my pocket. DD needs toothpaste so you know where I will be this weekend.

.50 Broccoli, Eat your veggies
Super Target has printable coupons for their broccoli, califlower or romaine lettuce - $1 off. This makes the broccoli and califlower only .50 each. I picked up two broccoli and one califlower last Friday night.
Menu Monday
Sunday - Lasagna, Salad and Garlic Bread
Monday - Baked Chicken Breast (BBQ), Potatoes & Onions, Green Beans
Tuesday - National Pancake Day (we may try IHOP)*
Wednesday - Potato Soup
Thursday - On Your Own Night**
Friday - Grilled Cheese
Saturday - Company for Dinner: Spaghetti with either Meatballs or Sausage
*I'd like to get some IHOP for dinner but I've gotten some resistance to this. DD definately doesn't like breakfast for dinner. In fact, I'm not so sure she likes breakfast for breakfast. Too bad!
** I will likely be working late so either DD will cook or we will eat out.

I saved $92.65 at Publix
Woo Hoo!
I found some really great deals at Publix Saturday afternoon. Some highlights include Crisco Extra Virgin Olive Oil BOGOF $6.49/2 less 2 $1 MQ netting to $2.25 each. I got five of these because I REALLY like the earthly flavor of this olive oil. I also found good deals on Green Giant Boxed Frozen Vegetables - normally $1.66 each on sale for $1 less coupons. Unfortunately, I didn't have alot of these coupons but at $1, they're still a good deal.
Totino's Pizza rolls were BOGOF for $3.79/2 less 2 .35 coupons (doubled) netting in at $1.20 a bag. The VIVA big roll, 2 pack regularly $4.49 was on sale for $3.49 less a $1.25 Publix coupon and a .50 MQ doubled netting to $1.50 for two rolls. No Yolks Dumplins netted to .59 per bag. Also a good value was Ragu Pasta Sauce at .75 a jar after sales/coupons and Ronzoni Pasta at .65 per pound even without a coupon.
After a $5 off (for buying 20 participating products) and $5 off $30 from a Publix mailer, my OOP was $107.32 and I saved a whopping $92. I should note that I picked up a couple of pricey items that raised my total price this week, such as a $7 pie, two packages of ground beef and two packages of chicken breasts.
Concern: I love Publix dearly for the quality of products they carry in their stores, the level of service and their great sales (along with coupon doubling) but I do not like they way they have started handling the coupons. They want them all up front, the cashier checks them all out to make sure they're valid and then they hold them on the ramp. The problem is when they ring up the coupons, I can't see what they're doing and if they are getting all of my coupons. I think I have missed some coupons for the second week in a row AND I had to remind the cashier to apply the $5 viva italia and $5 off $30 coupon this week.

The Mailman is saving me $5!
In today's mail is a brand new flyer from Publix for their Italian Sale. Included is a $5 off $30 coupon. I see lots of items this week that will be buy one get one free and I need to start working on my coupon match-ups.
Can you say 'spaghetti'? (I've got lots of Italian Sausage in the freezer from that Johnsonville Promotion a couple of weeks ago!)

Yummy Dinner! (Mid-week Meatless)
As I mentioned in an earlier post, we've designated Wednesday as a meatless day to make a small reduction in grocery expenses. Although the title is 'Meatless,' we don't take this too literally. A small side of some meat is ok as long as it isn't the focus of the meal. Last week we had a veggie dinner and homemade macaroni and cheese was the star.
This week, we tried something new - Birdseye Voila! (Sweet and Sour Chicken)
It was quite good and very quick and easy to prepare. I prepared a small green salad and put the Voila! meal on to cook. About 10 minutes and one pan was all it took. The package says that it is 3 servings but you'd have to have another side to make that work. One package was just right for the two of us. The chicken was quite tender. I would definitely buy this again, especially for the bargain price I paid for it. I don't recall the exact amount but I remember that I purchased it with a rain check for buy one get on free and then used a coupon. Probably about $1.50 each. Sweet - make that Yummy - Deal! Voila!

Publix Deals
My first trip to Publix (Sunday) held some really good deals.
5 Soft Scrub Cleaners at .48 each
Cascade Rinse Aid - free
Del Monte Tomatoes - free
Lipton Tea (2) - .52 each
Coffee Mate Creamer (2) - .17 each
Betty Crocker Cookie Mix (4) .34 each
Success Rice - 1.00 each
Three observations. First, how did Campbell's Beef Broth - the little red and white can - suddenly become $1.50? That's crazy. Secondly, how do folks find such great deals on their clearance items at Publix. At my store, there are just a couple of items each time. No large variety or quantities. Finally, my coupon for Johnson Buddies and my Steamer coupon didn't show up on my receipt. That was another $2 that I would have saved.
$74.02 oop after tax, $58.86 saved.
My second trip to Publix (Monday afternoon) was to pickup the Dixie Napkins (they were out Sunday) 3 for .50 each! Plus another Soft Scrub at .48 and a French Worcestershire for .49. From the clearance bin, I picked up two Sunsilk conditioners for .99/2. My only full price item was the Kitchen Bouquet at $2.79.
OOP was $6.86, saved $12.94. Now, that's what I call a shopping trip.

Free Magazine Subscription
Occasionally, I get offers from SheSpeaks.com to participate in surveys and sampling. Around Christmastime, I received some free samples of the new Ghiradeli Peanut Butter Squares. (This of course, was before all the controversy over peanut butter.)
Just last week, I received an invitation to participate in a Magazine survey and as a reward, I'm getting a year's free subscription to a Magazine. I selected Ladies Home Journal as my preference but we'll see what shows up in the mail box in 8-10 weeks!

Mr. Cool
We've been considering purchasing a freezer for some time and recently, the freezer portion of our extra fridge has become so full that I cannot buy anything frozen unless we eat something that was frozen.
We checked out Craig's list and found a 14 cf freezer in a nearby town. Before driving up to take a look at it, we stopped by the local appliance store and checked out the different sizes of freezers. It was quickly evident that a 14 cf freezer was simply not going to buy us much extra space. A 20 foot freezer was more in line with our needs.
We (hubby and I) started shopping around and came across a good deal at Lowes. It's a 20.5 cf upright freezer that they had clearanced from about $698 to $595 because it was the last item and it had a few small dents in the front door. In addition, they were offering a 10% discount on Energy Star appliances last weekend only for President's Day. Our net out the door - with tax - was $540. (Included in the deal was a rebate for delivery which we did not take advantage of.)
It's all hooked up and all the frozen storage stuff has been moved into place. Now I just need a good deal on frozen foods. And thanks to DH for the support on this. He just says that I have to save enough money on the food to make it worth the price. (p.s. I've already saved $501 on food this year!)

Steak n Shake
For anyone that has not heard, SteakNShake is celebrating their 75th anniversary. Beginning last Friday, February 13th and lasting until the end of March, their regular single steak burger is only .75 (limit one per person). The regular price is $2.49 in my market making a savings of $1.75 each.
If you're looking for a great deal on quick dining, consider a stop at the Steak and Shake.

Preparing to Save
Those savings dollars don't just magically appear on my receipt each week, it takes some research, planning, and a little work to make it all come together. My first step each week is to see what's on sale at my favorite grocery store, Publix. There are a couple of ways to do this.
The easiest way is to wait until the day your areas new ad is effective and go on line to http://www.publix.com/ to view the current week's ad. I've also discovered that some areas surrounding me start their weekly sale on Wednesday - one full day ahead of my area - and I can go on line Wednesday to see their ad.
A faster way is to look for sneak peeks on http://www.hotcouponworld.com/. Sometimes these are posted as early as Monday night. Generally speaking the Publix buy one, get one free items are pretty consistent throughout. You can also use this site to link to printable (IP) coupons through their database. By checking out store specific forums, you can also see what great deals other people found and even trade coupons.
My favorite way to find out the great deals is by visiting various blog sites. My favorite for Publix information is http://www.fiddledeedeeblog.blogspot.com/. Sarah routinely tells you what's on sale, gives links to the coupons, and shares her experiences with readers. She also allows you to post your own link so you can share your good deals, too!
No, wait! I can hear you now saying that you don't have the time to do this. Nonsense. I might spend an hour a week checking out the deals and getting my coupons ready. Now, in the last six weeks I have saved $430. If you consider that it only took me 6 hours, that's $71 per hour. Where can you get a job with so few hours a week and provides you with that kind of income (savings)? Now, in the interest of full disclosure, let me say that the more coupons you are managing, the more time it will take - but the more potential savings you will have.
You may also be thinking that you don't have room for this much stuff. I bet you could find some room if you just think outside the box. Everything does not have to go into your kitchen cabinets. Store stuff on your closet floor or under your bed. Garages and basements make excellent storage places. If you are concerned about pests, store only canned items in these areas.
I challenge you to give it a month. Buy the deals and stock up. No, don't just buy one. Multiples are the secret to this plan. When instand oatmeal was on sale, I bought 7 boxes. When Hunts tomatoes were BOGOF, I purchased 14 cans. Buy the stuff you will use over the next month or two or more.

Big deals this weekend!
First stop this weekend was Kroger for free Cottonelle. Our neighborhood Kroger was out of stock so we stopped off at one close by and they had plenty. 8 packages of Cottonnelle and a AJC ($2.88) for a total OOP of $2.29 incl
Second stop was Publix for our weekly shopping. Total OOP was $79.18 (including tax) after a total savings of $62.97. Best deals were the Land of Lakes Margerine at a net price of .35 each - we got 5. Also of note was the .27 Daisy sour cream (2) and FREE Aleve. Publix had a special publix q for $4 off two Aleve. Pair that with a sale price of $2.99 and two $1 MQ and we netted free Aleve. Since I did this deal twice, that's four free boxes of Aleve.
Finally, boredom set in late Saturday night and we all elected to run to Walmart. I needed a thing or two so that worked out great. Of special note from Walmart was the Kashi Bar's for $2.50 less a $2 MQ making them .50 each (2) and Quakes at $1.36 less a $1 MQ making them .36 each (3) and finally Progresso soup on sale for $1.50 less $1.10 MQ making 2 .40 cans of Progresso Soup. I spent a little more at Walmart than I expected but I picked up some cheap canned vegetables and some rinse aid for the dishwasher.
So, where am I on my spending and savings. To date, I am $171.72 over budget for the year. On the other hand, I have saved $430.19 on groceries and hba items in six weeks.

Frugal Friday
Tonight we dined on that fabulous $3.99 Pizza deal from Target mentioned in a previous post. We had a fresh salad - cuke and tomato provided by DD - and the pizza and coke. It wasn't the most luxurious Friday night dinner and no one served us, but you can't beat the price.
I've decided that to stretch our budget some, we would implement Frugal Friday. Something quick at home to protect the pocketbook. This also gives me the opportunity to use anything in the fridge that needs to be consumed before grocery shopping or spoiling. (Also, by dining in, we are less likely to "stop by the store" on the way home with inevidably results in some purchase. If we actually 'need' something, we'll go get it.)
I'd like to do a Meatless Monday but that simply doesn't work for us. Instead, we may do a Mid-week Meatless (Wednesday) where we have a meal without meat or with a small serving of meat such as a soup or breakfast meal. In these cases, meat is not the star but the supporting player.
For all you shoppers out there, be sure to pick up your free Cottonelle at Kroger and cheap Land of Lakes spread at Publix this week.

There's no such thing as a free lunch but...
would you believe one for $1.10?
That's how mine worked out today. We had breakfast catered this morning for a co-worker's tenth company anniversary. My favorite, Chick-fil-a. We had way more than we needed so after everyone ate, I picked up a couple of chicken minis and some fruit salad.
At lunch time, I heated them up along with a can of mandarin oranges and some Crystal Light, that was my lunch. My only expense was a bottle of water because I left mine at home. (I don't like to refill mine at work because some folks don't practice safe water fountain techniques!)
My afternoon snack was a mini bag of Jolly Time popcorn that I picked up for FREE at Publix last week.

MMMMMM BBQ!
I purchased a Boston Butt at Publix Saturday night. It was rubbed and put into the crockpot at 8:30pm Saturday with liquid smoke. (Within an hour or two, it smelled like we were in the smoke house!) About noon today, I began to "pulling" the meat, carefully removing any fatty pieces and chopping the outer crust. For dinner tonight, we re-heated the pork, covered in the oven, and made ourselves bar-b-que sandwiches with potato salad and baked beans.
Yummy! I'd definately do this again. Out of a 3.5# roast, we got about 1.75# of meat. Cheaper than picking up bbq on the way home! I see no reason why this can't go into the freezer!
Wheelin and Dealin
I had two good trips to Publix this weekend. (My first trip was a limited trip for dinner and breakfast items with a follow-up trip to pick up the other items we needed. Sometimes, time just gets away from you.) Let me summarize my deals:
Hunts Tomatoes
BOGOF -$1.39/2 less $1/2 MQ = .20 each. I got 14. We like tomatoes.
Jolly Time PopCorn
$3/3 - 3 $1/1 MQ = FREE I picked up three!
French's Worcestershire
$1.49 - .50 coupon doubled = .49 each, I bought two.
PAM professional spray
$2.99 on sale - $1 PQ and $.70MQ = 1.29
Johnsonville Sausage
On sale for $3 each, bought four less $5 MQ = $7 or $1.75 each.
(There's also a MIR for a $5 GC if you buy $10 in Johnsonville Sausage. These could end up being .50 each! That's a bargain.)
Mrs. Dash seasoning
$2.89 less a PQ $1.00 and .50 MQ doubled = .89 each
Not a bad weekend for grocery shopping. I do need to note that I am currently $146 over budget for January. Due to some potential economic changes in our household, we have decided to step up efforts to build a stockpile. With the addition of the sausage, the freezer remains full and we have quite a bit of staples - rice, noodles, spaghetti sauce, canned vegetables, cereal, coffee, tea, etc.
This has also been a busy week for coupon organization. All the 1/31 coupons needed to be pulled and I had at least two weeks of coupons to organize and add to the coupon bag. This takes time but it is well worth the effort - remember .50 sausage and .20 tomatoes!!!
