Stockpile Status

Organized and Inventoried!

Budgeting for 2009

This is a long and rambling post, you might want to grab a cup of coffee.

I've been following 'jane4girls..' for a couple of months now and I am amazed that she is able to feed her family of 4 for only $800 a year. I'd love to be able to replicate what she does but I just don't think I can. From what I understand, food prices in her area of the county are lower than mine. Also, her girls (from what I understand) are not big meat eaters and she does a lot of coupon trading. And finally, I am building a stockpile.

After careful consideration and looking at what we're currently spending, I intend to have the following goals:

$5000 for the year for food, paper goods, and health and beauty (drugstore) items. (We were averaging between $75 and $100 before DD moved back in and now we're at about $150 per week. Keep in mind that we are still building that stockpile. We are a full time family of three adults and all three meals a day generally come from this budget. We also have a family dinner with DS, DIL and two toddlers at least once a week. That's $96 per week if your calculator batteries are dead.)

$2500 for the year for eating out. This sounds like a lot! We normally eat out at least once a week and sometimes we will pick up a take out on a second night or breakfast on the weekend. ($48 per week! I'll be on the lookout for some good coupon deals. Restaurant.com may become my new best friend! I'd like this to be much lower and I will be looking for ways to cut it.)

This budget will NOT include any OOP for prescription medications and any transfer gift cards will be used in addition to the $5k figure. In addition, any remaining money from food for the week may be used towards eating out or towards purchase of a freezer (see below) or stockpile items.

I expect to see that expenditures will fluctuate each week depending on what is going on or what might be on sale that week. I intend to keep a weekly tab on what I'm spending and what I'm saving/earning through gift cards, rebates, and promotions. I would also like to purchase a stand-up freezer to increase my stockpile of meat and frozen items. (There are frequently excellent deals on frozen goods that I simply cannot take advantage of because of my limited freezer space.

If I find that circumstances or prices change, I reserve the right (after all this is just a blog) to change these figures or abandon this all together.

Publix and Target Savings

Publix: OOP was $59.02, Savings of $48.45 (45.08%)

I picked up a piece of salmon ($6.63) and a package of Chicken Breasts ($5.43) in addition to my other staples. Of note, I picked up four bags of Chex Mix at .28 each and two boxes of Success Rice for .49 each. A-1 was BOGOF so two of these were $1.10 after coupon and I picked up two more to get a free bottle of Bulls Eye BBQ Sauce. I also picked up one last Daisy Sour Cream at .29, two boxes of Salt Sense for .44 each and two bags of cookies for $1 each.

Target: OOP was $15.37, Savings of $36.60 (70.43%)

I was hoping to pickup some additional packages of the Bounty Napkins at 50% off but every single one was gone. Instead, I picked up two packages of batteries (free) and 9 bags of assorted chocolate candies for .39 each. Two premium M&M at .74 each and a Whitman's Sampler for $2.49. Add a package of socks at $6.99 (not on sale and no coupons.) DH says we have enough candy for the whole year now....wonder if I can print more battery coupons?

Not bad for a Monday. I'm working on my year end totals and details for my 2009 budget goals. More to follow on that later. I will also be re-organizing my stockpile this week and will have updated photos once that is complete. At this point, I have completely filled my new shelf and I have stuff still in bags on the table and floor surrounding the shelf unit.

After Christmas Shopping

DH and I decided to make a day of shopping Friday.

We went to a couple of stores but really found no great deals. One Kohl's we went to had very few people out shopping (upper income area) and the other Kohl's was as packed same as before Christmas (middle income area). I suspect that part of the long lines was really for returns. I found that only the true holiday items were bargain priced. (We were back in this same store Sunday and found that everything was back to pre-Christmas pricing except the holiday items.) I have to assume that things aren't really as bad for the retailers as the "News" wants us to believe.

Updated: I did find two adorable cordoroy dresses that I purchased with next year in mind. They were originally $36 on sale for $6.80 each. There were more dresses but they hadn't quite reached my decision point price. I may run back over there in a few days to check the price status.

Target had their Christmas merchandise at 50% off but there really wasn't anything that we really needed. I picked up a couple of packages of Bounty Napkins at 50% off and after comparing the price at Publix last night, I will be making another trip to Target today. $1.50 for 200 napkins less whatever coupons you have.

Today, I'm preparing my grocery list for the week and expect to head to Publix after lunch. I didn't find many real deals in their sale paper for the week. I do see where A.1. is BOGOF and I have two $1 coupons. After shopping today, I will pull all my 12/31 coupons and see if there is anything that I NEED to buy before the Q expires.

Christmas Planning

The Good:
I think I have only one gift left to purchase and a couple to wrap.
Some cookies are baked and ready, some have the dough ready to bake Wednesday.
Excitement is building.

The Bad:
I have to work all day Tuesday. (I'm driving carpool so I'm stuck til 5.)
The house is a wreck and laundry needs to be put away.
I need to make a quick run to the grocery store and the bank Wednesday.
The new year's work schedule will be hectic for January and February.

The joyful:
Wednesday starts a full 11 days off work. We're going to have fun, eat, be merry, and spend time with our family. We also plan to get some home projects finished after Christmas.

In case I don't get back before Thursday, have a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!

Menu Monday

Sunday - Turkey Breast Tenderloin, Stove Top, Baked Sweet Potatoes and Steamed Broccoli
Monday - No definite plans yet
Tuesday - Left over turkey and fixins
Wednesday - Christmas Eve goodies (ham sandwiches, potato soup, pigs in a blanket, cookies and candies)
Thursday - Honey Baked Ham, Mashed Potatoes, Homemade Mac and Cheese, Fresh Green Beans, Broccoli & Cauliflower
Friday - Pizza

There's a lot of broccoli in the menu this week because I got two bunches for free, one bunch of broccoli and one head of cauliflower for $1 each. Usually I shop the specials on Friday night when the store are not packed and then re-visit on Sunday to pick up deli meat and whatever we need for the week. I missed Sunday's trip completely. I'll probably drop back in Wednesday to pick up anything we're missing.

In case anyone is interested, there were not supposed to be any coupons in yesterday's paper. Next Sunday should be a different story.

Saving on Gifts

I stopped into Walgreens at lunch today to pick up that free hairdryer (after RR, of course). I didn't find any but I quickly looked through the store only to find that a gift I previously purchased at Target for $49.99 was on clearance/sale for $39.99 at Walgreens AND it came with a $10 RR. Yippee! It took me about 30 seconds to decide to take them up on this offer and I quickly checked out. I saved $10 and made $10. Way to go!

I still have a couple of last minute things to pick up but I'm mostly done. It's been a long a busy weekend. DS and DIL are moving into their first house. I've been painting and moving stuff. Now, I need to focus on important things like gifts and cookies.

One of the top Publix Trips Yet!

DD and I just got back from Publix. Bottom Line.....oop was $88.86......total saved $89.27.

Yea, I know. Some people can walk out of the store with a OOP less than $20 and savings up in the 70% but for me and my family, this is impressive. Now for the details:

Great deals tonight were:
2 Free Scott towels rolls thanks to coupons directly from Scott - Saved $3.98
BC Potatoes - were BOGOF. I have a stash but I picked up 7 boxes for DS & DIL avg .35 a box.
BC Brownies on BOGOF for $1.35 a box less coupons for an average of .60-.70 each
Fresh Broccoli - on sale for 2/$4 less a $1 Target Coupon (bought 2) and got a $2 credit for two Fresh Express Salads - also on BOGOF - making these free.
I got a free Kraft BBQ sauce with the purchase of two Kraft salad dressings (BOGOF!)
Texas Toast Croutons (crunchies) were BOGOF for .75 each less a .55 coupon each .20!
Coke products were on sale 3/$12 and you got the fourth one free!
Mt. Olive Pickles were BOGOF and I had a coupon.
Domino Sugar (5#) was on sale for $1.99 less a coupon
I also picked up 14 cans of tomatoes and various vegetables - all BOGOF with coupons
Two Rubbermaid containers on sale for $2.99 less a $1 MQ and a $1 PQ netting .99 each

Coupon, non-coupon deals and regular priced items:
Hawaiian Bread, Grape Tomatoes, Milk, Sweet Potatoes, Onions, OJ, Hash Browns, Cheese, Biscuits, Sweet Rolls, Bacon, Ground Sirloin, Redi Whip, Juice, Pasta, Gravy Mix, and Benadril.

I'll sleep happy.

Dancing the happy dance.....

I was catching up on some mail last night and my mail-order pharmacy indicated that one of my migraine drugs (Imitrex) would be available as a generic this month. I wasted no time in calling Walgreens confirm. To my delight, it is available so today I called the pharmacy to refill my Imitrex as a generic. I've been waiting a long time for that!

The co-pay on the 9 tablet prescription runs anywhere from $50-60. (Let me just say that when a pill costs you $6 a pop, you are a little hesitant to take one at the drop of a hat.) It is really available as a generic as I found out this afternoon. Can I tell you what a financial relief this will be? I fill this thing at least 6 times a year so I will be reducing my prescription costs by $300 a year.

Menu Monday

Sunday - Homemade Chili with noodles
Monday - Crockpot Roast Beef with potatoes, carrots and onions
Tuesday - Coda Chili - served with or over a salad (Think..Taco Salad)
Wednesday - Roast Repeat (you guessed it, left over roast beef)
Thursday - Homemade Pizzas (may be substitution if I am not cooking)
Friday - TBD

This is not very creative but it allows a lot of flexibility and this close to the holidays, that is always helpful with last minute shopping trips, wrapping gifts and baking cookies. I will also have my lovely granddaughters (2 two-year olds!) with me Wednesday and I may have to go out of town Thursday. DH is working on bids this week and DD has her holiday party Friday. DS and DIL are scheduled to close on their first home Wednesday. It will be a busy week - thank goodness I only work two days this week!

Friday Bargains, Savings and Makin' Money

I was out shopping today, not for Christmas, but for regular items. First stop was Target where I picked up two packages of Johnsonville Sausages at $4.64 each and used a $1 coupon on each. That's $3.64 compared to Publix's price of $5.24! I also got two packages of chicken (1.5#) for $5.00. These will go into the freezer this weekend. I also used two $5 coupons on the AirWick Luminair's for a net price of -.02. Sweet. Finally, we picked up two packages of Rayovac batteries for a net price of $1. ($31.61 oop, saved $19.46)

A few hours later, I went to Publix to pick up most of my groceries for the week. Along with - a $7.50 bag of rice (for a project - not to eat), a $10.65 Beef Roast, two packages of Chicken Breasts at about $10, $4.97 for ground sirloin - I also picked up the following super specials: 8 cans of Progresso Soup. $1.25 each and used a bunch of coupons including two $1.10/1 coupons. Betty Crocker muffins were also on buy one, get one free so I got four of those. Frosted flakes were again on sale for $1.99 less a $1 coupon - I got two. No fabulous deals but I still saved $53.76 on a $110.70 OOP.

Finally, DH had to exchange a belt at Target. I sent three Rayovac coupons in with him and he came out with three packages of free batteries! Woo Hoo!

All in all, not a bad day. I will still need to pop back into the grocery store Sunday to get a little deli meat for lunches next week and some fresh milk.

Oooops! I almost forgot. I transferred a prescription to Rite Aid and collected a $30 gift card. This just happens to be the same drug that is currently still offering a $35 rebate so that is going in the mail tomorrow. If I get the rebate, I will have actually 'made' $10 on this one! (Don't feel bad for the pharmaceutical company - they get $262 dollars for 9 pills. My normal co-pay runs about $50-60 each time I refill it. Over the years, they've certainly made their money from me. (One day this stuff will be generic!)

Menu Monday

Sunday - Vegetable Beef Soup with Sour Dough Bread
Monday - Breakfast for Dinner*
Tuesday - Soup Seconds ( will serve with a grilled cheese sandwich)
Wednesday - Pizza
Thursday - flex days
Friday - flex days

This is an unpredictable week and we may be picking up something for Thursday and Friday's dinners depending on how things shake out.

* This is sure to cause controversy in the household since one member is adamantly opposed to the idea of Breakfast for Dinner.

Weekend Shopping Update

I really like shopping at Publix on Friday afternoons. It's quiet and I can take advantage of all my coupons and their sales without feeling rushed or constantly having to move to accommodate someone else.

Friday's trip to Publix was a OOP of $79. Savings was $81. Great trip, mostly buy one get one free items and things with coupons. I also purchased six Ziploc products (@ 1.99 ea), applied two $2 off coupons and used the $5 off 5 Publix coupon. So they netted at about .50 each. I have one more of those $5 off 5 coupons and may use on some cleaning products next weekend. Not much meat included in the bounty for this week so dinner choices will be limited to what we have.

Saturday, I stopped in at Harry's and picked up some produce, chicken and scallops. My OOP was $32. (Most of the deals were good except for the chicken which, although it was delicious and tender, was significantly overpriced.)

I finished my weekly shopping on Sunday evening by picking up some items we needed to complete the week. OOP was about $40. Net OOP for the week was about $140 with a savings of $81. Not bad, but we could do better.

December

I'm off today and have a busy day planned to put up some Christmas lights and finish my decorations. DH and I are also going out to the jewelery store this afternoon to get my new anniversary ring sized. (This was a surprise Anniversary gift this week. It is very pretty.) We may do a little shopping and have lunch while we are out.

I'd also like to try to get to the grocery store this afternoon as well. I've found that the weekends are getting difficult to manage. Too many people, deals are gone, just pure aggravation. I also have two prescriptions that I want to transfer (for the gift certificates, of course) today.

As you can see, I will be busy today.

A quick recap of Wednesday's visit to Publix: Great deals on the Glade Candles - I picked up 5 candles for a total of 50 cents. Also, I got two 24 count Tylenol gelcaps for free. Then, I got four packages of Vanity Fair napkins for .97 cents each. Total OOP was $26.27 with tax, savings of $32.01.
